Indoor Stroke Clinics

Swimming is a highly technical sport and stroke efficiency is the path to success. Without the pressure of an impending race and training schedule, winter and spring are perfect times to learn and practice proper swimming technique. Open water swimming technique include nuances and strategy different from pool swimming. Our experienced coaches have completed hundreds of race miles for valuable first hand knowledge to guide and help you swim faster and more efficiently in open water.  We share our experiences to transform your swimming. Our 60 - 90 minute clinic is perfect for the novice triathlete looking to learn more techniques and strategy to gain an edge in competition. You will leave with practical applications that you can use to swim faster immediately. The clinic teaches fundamental swimming techniques that alleviate open water fears and improve efficiency to move through the water with less effort. Learn specific strategies and tips for a better swim and successful race.

Open Water Clinics

Each open water clinic addresses a specific topic and follows with a practice swim on our guarded course. Topics include: 

Swimming Transformation: Fundamentals of Open Water Swimming and Racing  Perfect for triathletes preparing for upcoming races and those new to open water swimming.  Clinic includes how to prepare for your swim, equipment, course and condition assessment, how to acclimate to cold water, how to navigate a mass start, sighting made easy, faster turns and finishes into a relaxed T1, and more.

Calming Open Water Fears: Anxiety Management for Open Water Swimming for the beginning open water swimmers - Mental training and preparation are critical for a successful open water swim. Learn how to deal with fears, overcome doubt, and increase your self-confidence in the open water. This on-land and in-water clinic will provide tips and strategies for training your most powerful muscle to conquer the open water. Dates TBD at National Harbor. Attendees may continue to swim during the WaveOne Weekly Sunrise or Sunset Swim.

Advanced OWS Racing Techniques and Strategies: For the experienced swimmer or ironman triathlete wanting to improve race results. Clinic address pacing, sighting, drafting, nutrition, and adapting strategy for various conditions and currents. Dates TBD at National Harbor. Attendees may continue to swim during the WaveOne Weekly Sunrise or Sunset Swim.

General Practice Swim Format: A 200-400 meter course will be fully kayak and lifeguard supported. Perfect for triathletes registered for the  upcoming races. Clinic will include Fundamentals of Open Water Racing including acclimation secrets, racing starts, sighting, swimming in crowds and strategy. The first 30-40 minutes will be dryland instruction followed by water instruction and the practice swim. Course is configured to accommodate swimmers abilities, weather and water conditions, and purpose of the swim.Clinic begins at listed time. Arrive prepared to swim. Bring swim equipment, hydration, snack and notebook if desired. Check in opens at 30 minutes prior to clinic start time.

Small Group Open Water Swimming Lessons:

From time to time we offer a lesson with less students in the class. The lesson is an opportunity for focused attention to details that can make you a better, faster, more confident open water swimmer. Limited number of participants provide chance for more personal interaction, question and answer and demonstrations. Small groups typically limited to 10 swimmers. (practice swim with feedback is included after clinic). Lesson will concentrate on swim stroke technique and specific open water strategies that will improve your race and swim speed. Meet at the shore/beach at Lake Anna State Park, South Beach at Sandy Point or dock at National Harbor. Coached by WaveOne founder Denis Crean.

Open Water Swimming Disclosure: Open water swimming involves variable conditions. Every day is different. Every swim is different. Please see our website for schedule and weather updates particularly prior to event date. Cancellations due to weather shall be determined in the best interest of the swimmers and no refunds will be given for weather cancellations. Dryland clinic will occur rain or shine. We only cancel swims for potential or actual lightning activity, and water quality concerns from previous precipitation. All swimmers swim at their own risk. Risks may include potential injury and death. Be safe.

Online prices are valid until closed prior to clinic/swim date. On site registration is available for an additional $10. Registration includes a one day WaveOne Swimming membership. Prices and event times subject to change without notice. No refunds or transfers. Park, parking and entrance fees are not included in the swim/clinic or event fee.
